To the right is a visual intelligence map (VIM 7.0), showing the scaled version of the complete project implementation plan (PIP) of the fully worked $8 billion Black Ridge Mine ultra large virtual project. It was created to support the complex task of explaining and transferring the project delivery knowledge that creates and implements the strategic plan that delivers the project objectives and controls risk.

The PIP is the project director’s mastery to how they will lead, deliver, control and report progress, performance and risk. I have started here because either an inadequate PIP that was allowed through the gate approval process and/or was poorly implemented, frequently appears on most project lessons learnt and gravitates to the top of the world’s deadliest project sins that causes project derailment and/or project overrun.

My advisory services have been design to intervene to the many contributing factors that cause project failure.

Empowering Steering Committees

The PD’s Large business CEO level skills and their acquired art and science knowledge of project delivery are usually not the competencies of executive members of a steering committee. They are the best and brightest but their day job does not involve the leadership and development of a PIP that creates a high-performance project environment to deliver an ultra large project.

My advisor services attach to the steering committee, enabling them the insights of a PD with the required tacit knowledge and structured explicit knowledge to dive deep and evaluate the details and engage the steering committee in the appropriate discussions that approve or instruct further work to enable effective governance and gate approval.

The lessons of what contributed to developing and implementing a successful project plan that delivered the goals, objectives and mitigated issues that cause project overrun, was a set of the right routines and practices implemented by the assembly and development of high-performance leaders, people, teams and culture.

With this knowledge and experience of both extremes of the project score card, my advisory services play a critical role in advising steering committees of the actions to take in preventing and controlling project overrun and importantly critiquing and validating the monthly report which enable the appropriate discussions and provide direction.
